Essay 1: Analysis of “Losing Streak” by Kathryn Schulz
Write an 900 – 1,000+ word critical analysis of Schulz’s reflective essay, “Losing Streak.”
Early in her essay, Schulz examines numerous types of loss, concluding that “we lose things because we are flawed; because we are human; because we have things to lose” (199). However, she doesn’t stop there, and in fact, continues to make connections among types of loss ranging from losing things, losing memory, and losing a loved one.
For this first essay assignment, I would like you to explore three separate observations/reflections the Schulz makes about loss. Then after you explore these three reflections, articulate an argument that Schulz makes that connects them all. This is your thesis, and it must be arguable (a reasonable person could disagree with your conclusion).
You may begin your essay with a paragraph long summary of Schulz’s essay or you may choose another opening strategy. In general, you want your introduction to do three things: engage, offer context, and lead the reader to the analysis to come. For this first essay, I would like you to announce the thesis early in the essay, perhaps in the opening paragraph. Announce the argument, and then support it with the body paragraphs.
In short, your paper should meet the conventions of a standard critical essay:
Title your essay. This title should give the reader a clue as to your thesis.
Announce an argument/thesis that is clear, focused, supportable, arguable, and insightful.
Include three or more supportive quotations, correctly introduced and integrated.
Include an acknowledgement (and perhaps a refutation) of an opposing perspective. This need not be of your central argument; an opposing perspective on a smaller point is fine.
Use present tense in narrating action.
