The purposes of this paper are to 1) give you practice identifying the ways in which arguments about political and social issues are based on underlying political ideologies, and 2) give you an introduction to citing sources using ASA format.
Write a 3-4 page paper that compares, contrasts, and analyzes the political ideologies expressed by the authors of the two op-ed (opinion/editorial) pieces posted above. Pay attention to when these articles were written.
Things to research/think about as you write:
What is each writer’s party affiliation? What is their background (education, jobs they’ve had, etc.–don’t waste time writing about their families or personal lives here)? What public offices have they held?
Be very sure that you use the information about how to define political ideologies listed in the study guide. Most importantly, how do these two writers differ in their beliefs about what role the government should play (or not) in our personal lives and in helping to solve social/economic problems? What do they want the government to do or not do, and why? What do they think that individuals/households should do or not do?
To what extent do you think that either or both of these writers turned out to be right about what we needed to do to get the COVID pandemic under control? (You don’t have to take sides or pick one or the other here; it’s ok to talk about things from both articles that you thought turned out to be useful or problematic.)
Remember to CITE YOUR SOURCES PROPERLY. See the file posted above for how to cite sources in ASA (sociological) format. You will need to use in-text parenthetical citations and a works cited page, NOT endnotes or footnotes.
Also remember that the turnitin plugin will be enabled for this paper. It will catch ANY instances of you cutting and pasting material from online sources OR copying each other’s papers.
