Choose a musical piece from either Ghana or Nigeria. Do not use music from the examples given in the textbook. You can find something on Youtube or you may find something in the LPC online listening database.
Listen to the music, and describe it in detail. The following questions are given to help guide your listening.
Tips
Listen several times, and describe what you hear from beginning to end. What happens first? Does it change? What instruments do you hear? Can you hear a steady beat? Do you hear any voices? How many players do you think are performing? Does the tempo change? Are the patterns repetitive or always changing? Is pitch a factor? Do you hear polyrhythms? Do you hear any call and response? How does it end? Is the music what you expected from reading the text and listening to the music in the lecture? Don’t just answer these questions; use them as a guide as you describe the music, in detail, from the first sound to the last.
Grading
A 10 point paper will use the correct format, will use correct spelling and grammar, and will describe the music in detail. Appropriate musical terms will be used correctly (as best you can).
