The purpose of this research paper will be to determine why you believe a character from a movie or a show does NOT fit the
accurate/true psychological diagnosis they are portraying. The paper is worth a total of 30 points. It needs to be in APA style,
between 3-5 pages (page count not including the title page, abstract, or resources), double spaced, times new roman, and 12pt font.
Explore the subject of abnormal psychopathology by choosing one character in a movie or a show who has been given a mental
health diagnosis. By researching and providing a true representation of the diagnosis, explain why the character representation is
inaccurate. This paper is to allow you to critically think about the portrayal of abnormal psychology in media it should not be a
report of the media itself.
Along with a clear, but brief description/summary of the movie or show you chose and why you chose it, please answer the
following questions within your paper (at least one paragraph per question):
1. What is the diagnosis and what is the true criteria to be diagnosed with this disorder?
2. How does this character portrayal negatively represent and harm people with this specific disorder?
3. In what ways could the movie/show portray the diagnosis more accurately?
4. What of the diagnosis, if any, did the character representation correctly portray?
5. Was the inaccurate representation important to the story telling of the media?
o Why do you think the movie/show makers decided to depict inaccuracies?
6. Include at least 1 paragraph with your opinion/thoughts on the media piece itself.
You will need to find at least 2 resources that connect to and support your thoughts and findings. You may use your textbook as one
source, peer reviewed articles from PsychInfo online, and other source materials. For resources other than your textbook, please
include copies in an appendix at the end of your paper.
