Now that you have a better sense of how individual texts work, you will move on to analyzing how texts within and across subject areas come together to form a conversation. To do so, you will decide on a subject area that has some interest to you (preferably an issue related to your course of study) and conduct research using the library databases. Your goal is to find 3-4 sources that are in conversation with one another, which means they either cite each other, cite the same authorizing source, or refer to the same event, location, or object of analysis.

You will then rhetorically analyze how those sources are in conversation with one another: where they agree and disagree, how they refer to one another, how they use each other to establish ethos and/or relevance, ideas they have in common, what each article adds that might be new, how the authorsbackgrounds influence their argument, and so forth.

This assignment is designed to help you understand the conversation that is currently in progress about your issue so that you are better prepared to contribute to that conversation. As such, you should consider it the beginning of your research project, which will last the rest of the semester. Prompt: Synthesize 3-4 scholarly sources in order to explain both how they are in conversation with one another; then, make an argument about how they inform the larger conversation around your chosen topic.

Learning, Writing, and Research Goals: The goal of this assignment is to use your understanding of a single academic text, which you developed in the first assignment, as a building block toward synthesizing a larger academic conversation. As you do so, you will gain opportunities to practice critical reading strategies, develop effective research practices, and study the moves made in and between scholarly texts. Thenthrough practice in composing, revising, and editing you will demonstrate your understanding of academic research as conversation in a clearly constructed argumentative essay. This project also requires that you annotate the sources you use. Doing so now will give you head start on the annotated bibliography due in the next unit.

Process: 1) To accomplish the goals of this assignment, you will begin by choosing a topic and engaging in research. If you were inspired by the article you worked with for the last essay, you may choose to start there, but you shouldnt feel obligated to do so. 2) Then, you will choose 3-4 sources that are in conversation with one another; I suggest sources that directly refer to one another. 3) Once you have chosen your sources, you will map their connections through a number of class and pre-writing activities. This will allow you to identify the relationships between the sources, select evidence that illustrates those relationships, and explain how this conversation informs the larger discussion in the field.

A successful essay will:
Have a title that reflects the tone and purpose of your essay Engage readers with an effective introduction Clearly identify the ways that these sources speak to one another in a specific, complex thesis Effectively integrate evidence from each source to support your claims about how they are in conversation with one another Focus on synthesis rather than summary Use strong, analytical topic sentences to frame your paragraphs and support your thesis Include a conclusion that moves beyond summary and connects your sources to the larger conversation Be consistently formatted using the appropriate citation Include an annotated bibliography of all cited sources Be at least 1500 words (at least 6 pages) Show evidence of thoughtful revision and careful editing Be submitted to Nuoodle as a *.docx or *.pdf file

HELPFUL TIPS 1. Remember (again), you are not saying any source is right or wrong or more effective than the others; instead, you are making an argument for how they illustrate a conversation and together inform the larger conversation about your topic. In some ways, you might consider yourself the moderator of a panel of experts. Your jobas the non-expertis to put the experts in conversation with one another and help the audience understand that conversation. 2. As you engage in research, do not stop reading just because youve settled on 3-4 sources. You should continue to read around your sources to gain a fuller understanding of how scholars are framing your issue. This will help you refine your understanding of how your sources fit into the larger conversation. 3. In many ways, this is a more complicated compare and contrast essay; indeed, synthesis is related but it is more concerned with pulling your sources together than comparing differences in discrete categories. As such, subject-by-subject and point-by-point organizational strategies can be used. That said, analyzing one source at a time makes synthesis VERY difficult. So, you might want to consider chronological (oldest to most recent), problem-solution (one source identifies a problem and the others offer varying solutions), or climactic (most important to least) organization instead of or in addition to those two strategies. Dont worry! We will go over these organizational strategies in class and you will experiment with them in drafts. 4. Revision is an important part of this course and it is included in the rubric. Make sure you leave time to revisenot simply edityour drafts. You need to show evidence that you responded to your peers, writing center coaches, and/or instructor. Because we collect drafts in Nuoodle, we will compare your final draft to previous drafts as we look for evidence of revision.

Academic conversation on nurses’ relationship with their patients

In the profession of nursing, it is the job and duty of a nurse to make sure that a patient receives the best care possible and recovers quickly. Molina has conducted studies on the patient and relationship with the nurse and the importance of self-autonomy in the system. The article that many have cited and used in their work that she produced is called the Impact of Nurse-Patient Relationship on Quality of Care and Patient Autonomy in Decision-Making which was published on January 29, 2020. Two other researchers who have cited Molina work is Mostafa Bijani the author of Development and psychometric assessment of the triage nurses’ professional capability questionnaire in the emergency department posted on September 1, 2020 her article on patient care and relationship with nurses. The last author that is connected the idea is Ragga Ali who is the author of Impact of an Educational Program on Sexual Distress Associated with Cervical Cancer which was published April 22, 2021. These articles are in conversation with each other as they have conducted studies and have shown the good and the flaws of the current Nursing system that must addressed for nurses to provide patients the best care possible.

Molina article describes the importance of patient autonomy within the relationship of a nurse and a patient. The study first begins by describing what the role of the patient and nurse must be to give the best care possible to patients. Molina talks about how they gathered information by collecting records of patient visits to the hospital but also interviews were done as well to see how the care was given by nurses. It is interesting to note how some studies identify the role of nurses as simple informants of treatment regimens based on the assumption that if patients understand, they will be compliant, again highlighting the maternalistic role of the nurse (Molina 2.2). The research done by Molina show how a nurses role is beyond what normal people think they dont just listen to the patient but also help the patient when they are in a rough place. The next author also talks about these ideas in her paper allowing them to be in conversation with one another.

Mostafa Bijani the author of the article Development and psychometric assessment of the triage nurses’ professional capability questionnaire in the emergency department, who posted a couple of months after Molina published her paper, used it to support her own research that she found. Mostafa conducted the study in an equivalent manner but instead of using records she used live data by her grouping following and watching triage nurses’ work. Triage nurses are nurses that work in the emergency room, and they see various injuries, diseases, and other subjects that could endanger one’s health. The nurse-patient relationship is one of the aspects that affects the patients autonomy (Mostafa 2.3). Molina and Mostafa studies show how the importance of a nurse playing in active role in the relationship. This idea brought up multiple times in their studies showing how they are in conversation. Her study only improved the Molina study to be accurate and only improve upon it.

Mostafa and Molina conducted research in a comparable manner, however Ragaa Ali the author of Impact of an Educational Program on Sexual Distress Associated with Cervical Cancer Moilna work but does not follow the same way of research. She conducted the research in a different manner by giving a class to women on sexual distress after a cervical cancer treatment happen to them. She would have coworkers review and grade how well she got her point across and how the patients reacted with her. The patients felt that they did not receive enough attention on the matter from the health care provider that they had visited, and research showed from this study showed that their needs to more important in the patient needs since they must receive physical and mental health as well. Maternity proper oncology training Senior nurses reverberating into cervical cancer-related sexual distress to increase their ability to improve women’s cervical cancer sexual distress (Ragga, 9) This quote from Ragaas study shows that the nurses job is to make sure they have proper training to address the patient needs. This is described by the other two articles as well and explain how that plays a major role in the relationship of the patient and the nurse. These points allow the articles to talk in conversation with one another.

The three articles all talk about how the relationship of the nurse and patient affects the quality of the care. Mostafa and Molina used similar procedures to conduct a study on the relationship between patients and nurses. However, Ragga had a different approach and cited evidence from Molina study to further her point. The authors use the ideas that they express from conducting their ideas to converse with one another. They talk about how nurses need to be active and give support as best as possible and this should come from experience and training. But also to express to the patient by allowing them to be autonomous by explaining their choices on what they want to do with the disease that they have. These articles are in conversation and cite each other to improve and distinguish their point from one another by building upon one another research and allowing growth to occur on the ideas that are presented in the papers.

Impact of Nurse-Patient Relationship on Quality of Care and Patient Autonomy in Decision-Making by Molina-Mula and Julia Gallo-Estrada discuss the idea of the care related in how well a patient and nurse relationship based on how much autonomy the patient can handle. It paints the patient’s role as a passive role to observe and give feedback to nurses on what they feel and what they are doing. It describes how the nurse plays an active role in patients’ wellbeing and health. They run tests and make sure that the patient is receiving the correct care. The term hospice care comes up a lot in these articles this car for people who are at the end of their lives 6 months or less to live. The care here is to make sure that the patient is comfortable as possible. The article describes what nurses do and how the patient reacts and what nurses do to make sure is a positive reaction and not a negative. This article is in conversation with the other two articles as it cites them as examples of what to do when nurses give hospice care and care in general. They describe what nurses did in a scenario and what went well and what they did not do as well. The articles converse on the point of care to make sure that whatever a nurse does, the patient’s wellbeing is the priority.

Development and Psychometric Assessment of the Triage Nurses’ Professional Capability Questionnaire in the Emergency Department by Mostafa Bijani, Mahnaz Rakhshan, Mohammad Fararouei, and Camellia Torabizadeh. This article is an experiment done on triage nurses who are nurses that work in the emergency department of a hospital. The study shows if the triage nurses are taught enough or if they need to be trained more in being able to handle different situations. They see how the nurses act to patients and different injuries that come across in the emergency room. This article is in conversation with my other articles is the fact that the other two articles use this article as a base line to describe scenarios that all nurses could face. The articles in this conversation all build off each other and allow the conversation to flow.

Educational Program on Sexual Distress Associated with Cervical Cancer by Ali Ragga, Hagar kamal, Hanan Elzeblawy Hassan, and Soad Abd El Salam. This article is a study done on how nurses and health care workers teach and educate women on cervical cancer. It shows how patients find it hard to reach out to their health provider and nurses to help them understand what they are going through. It is the job of the provider and the nurse to reach out and help them understand. The study says that the current way to provide care is good for right now but needs improvement. The training of the nurses and also how they communicate with the patient must be worked upon to provide adequate care
