Expository Analysis Essay on “Crummy First Draft”

The “additional materials” file is the essay my assignment is doing an analysis on.

Write a 3-5 page analysis essay (including a Work Cited page) discussing the specific writing techniques used by the author to shape the message and specific points of their essay for the reader. In other words, examine & discuss the author’s use of expository patterns of development to communicate.

Discuss answers to questions such as, but not limited to:

Does the author have a significant point/Central Controlling Idea to unify the writing? Thesis statement?
If using definition, does the author clarify the specific criteria or characteristics of the definition? Is there a point made by using definition?
If using illustration, are the examples relevant, clear, and credible?
If using description, does the language create vivid images which appeal to the senses?
If using narration, does the author use a logical order to present the sequence of action/events? How is pace controlled? Is dialogue used effectively?
If using process analysis, does the author logically organize the steps or advice? use imperative or declarative sentences? use personal pronouns clearly?
If using classification, does the author use logical categories with clear characteristics?
Does the author display awareness of audience with vocabulary, shifts in person, or persuasive devices?
Does the writing have the qualities of effective writing: logical order, topic unity, discussion completeness, wording concision (avoids clutter) and grammatical coherence?

Do NOT merely retell the story/essay in your own words (paraphrase).
Do NOT simply re-phrase the main points (summary) without commenting on how the author makes the points.
Do NOT merely react to the contents of the essay with your own opinion/position regarding the subject matter (summary and reader response are part of planning)

Do NOT use second person (you) to address your reader; two exceptions: if using a question directed to reader as a intro. Hook, and when quoting from the original essay.

Do NOT use first person (I) and avoid references to yourself as the writer of the analysis (I think, I feel, I believe, We will discuss, etc.)

Use a supported thesis statement to focus your writing. Underline your thesis statement.

Essay must include a Works Cited page with full source citation in MLA style, even if the essay is the only listed source.
