this week the class will engage in an important discussion related to Diversity in Today’s Workforce, which comes along at a point in history when fashion must reflect on the current systems in place and embrace the current marketplace in an effort to move forward and make positive changes that are much needed.
As with our other discussion, my goal is plant the seed that encourages you to reflect, research, think and engage in an open discussion related to the topic. As a reminder, my discussion areas are not to merely answer a few questions and run away. Prior to participating in this discussion, please be certain to watch the BOF Live interview titled, Stella Jean; Do Black Lives Matter in Italian Fashion? In addition, kindly research articles related to the lack of diversity in today’s fashion industry.
Here are some topic points to start the discussion moving forward – please read your classmates’ posts to make certain you engage in any discussion already ongoing. One of the biggest challenges and necessities of diversity is that it needs to mirror fashion brands’, retailers’, or designers’ customer or client base. Does it do so fashion at this moment? How can we change the fashion workplace, what needs to happen for American brands, as well as global brands?
What about fashion education, what needs to happen to support the decolonization of your fashion education?
I want the class to think about and discuss some of the benefits and challenges associated with diversity in the workplace. If you know of any fashion or non-fashion organizations that value diversity, please inform us. Thanks.
