Within the professional workplace, daily routines are typically headed by the individual in a leadership position, such as a manager or supervisor. In some situations, the supervisor is given the authority to make the concluding remark or decision, even if their subordinates do not agree or if there is a breach of ethicality. Hauser (2018) expresses that there is a discrepancy between some professionals and their subordinates. Most often than not, people in positions of higher power have become established through years of experience and practice, and this knowledge can convince them that they have full authority over others. As such, these supervisors may be met with unethical encounters. Among these, some examples include defamation of an employee for the purposes of career termination, financial extortion, and personal pleasures using business assets (not meant for recreational purposes) (Al Halbusi et al., 2020). Regrettably, if employees experience the unethical behaviors of their supervisor, they become more susceptible to partaking in similar actions, thereby running the integrity of the organization as a whole.
However, according to Section 1.03 of the APA Code of Ethics, if an individual is a spectator of an action that comes into conflict with the set of codes, they can take the necessary steps to bring the conflict to its resolution by reporting it to an ethics committee. To do this, however, enough evidence and support must be garnered to convince committee members that the supervisor was indeed violating a code. If successful, then the unethical supervisor is removed, and the workspace can become regulated.
