Sources: Any of the texts we have read so far. The academic sources I provided on Brightspace that are specifically about campus will be particularly useful, but you can look for ways to use Orvell, Jacobs, Whyte, and the texts about place in FieldWorking. You must use the Shepherd University Campus Master Plan as a source. You cant use any sources that have not been provided by me unless you have those sources approved in advance, because this paper isnt a research paper and I want you to focus on the writing at this stage.

If you are not on campus this semester, you can contact me for permission to write about the development plan for your hometown or neighborhood. You will have to find scholarly sources to use for this option, working with a Shepherd librarian. You will have to locate the development plan for the town or neighborhood you will write about.

Assignment: Shepherds campus has greatly expanded since its founding, and the university has plans to expand further and build on the campus history. Using your own observations of Shepherd’s architecture, as well as the texts we have read for this class, write an essay that answers one of the following questions: 1. Explain how the arrangement of space at Shepherd shape interaction of students, faculty and staff should in the future? Or, 2. How should the university be connected to the town and/or the natural world around it?

As you develop your paper and your thesis, make sure your paper takes a stand on what you think should be central to future expansions and renovations. You must specifically address the Shepherd University Campus Master Plan.

Evaluation criteria:

A clearly stated thesis in your introduction. Make sure your thesis is an argument! Include a paragraph on the counter-argument to make your thesis stronger. 25 points

Support of your thesis throughout the paper in terms of evidence and interpretation of that evidence. That evidence should include fieldwork on the Shepherd campus. 25 points

Although you are welcome and encouraged to use evidence from your own experience of the Shepherd campus, you must use at least five sources from our readings to prove your thesis. For each source, you need a quote that you analyze, and you must introduce and analyze your quotes (quote sandwich.) You must use the Shepherd University Campus Master Plan as a source. I keep mentioning it because it is key to this paper. 25 points

A logical organization for your paper and transitions between sections. 5 points

In-text citation and a Works Cited list, according to MLA guidelines. 5 points

A paragraph of process description at the end of the paper, describing the choices you made as you worked on the paper. When you hand in your revision, keep the original paragraph of process description and add a second paragraph of process description for the revision, highlighting the changes you made for the final draft. When I grade the paper, I will be reading your paragraph first, then comparing the draft and the original paragraph of process description to the revision in order to see the changes you’ve made. 5 points

Clear, meaningful sentences, free of grammatical error and carefully proofread. 10 points
