Reading Questions Chapter 6

Thoughtfully answer the following questions:

1. First define culture. Next, think your own life and identify examples of both explicit and implicit cultural rules in your own family. The handout My Cultural Passport in the Assignment Module, may give you some ways to think about your own culture. Explicit – stated clearly and in detail – you were taught these rules. Implicit – not specifically stated but you ‘got’ it by observing the behavior of others. Remember you don’t need to turn in the My Cultural Passport handout but it will help you think about your family culture.

2. The chapter tells us that culture is passed on from generation to generation. This is true but there are also cultural differences between generations. Describe a cultural difference you have noticed between your generation and either your parents or grandparents and describe that difference. Explain how that difference affects your relationships.

3. Explain why it is important to understand that everyone has a culture.

4. Compare and contrast the individualistic and interdependent cultural orientations. Which orientation most closely represents your cultural perspective?

5. Describe at least two reasons why it is essential for teachers to be sensitive to and understand childrens linguistic and cultural diversity?
