Discuss how one agent of socialization of your choice works to shape our ideas about racial and ethnic groups. Find one scholarly source to support your main points. How does this agent of socialization shape the meaning associated with various racial groups? What meanings are taught? Do you notice any fallacies, such as stereotypes or broad, inaccurate generalizations? Finally, do you observe any changes over time in the way this agent of socialization has portrayed or taught the meanings of racial groups? To review the agents of socialization, see Chapter 5 section 3. Agents of socialization include: Families, Schools, Churches, Government agencies, Media, Peer groups, Workplaces. Finally, choose one sociological theory (section 3 in Chapter 11) and describe how it might view the scenario that you have presented. What would the theory notice about how the agent of socialization is teaching the meaning of racial groups?
