Essay 1: Womens Work in Early America
How did womens work (paid and unpaid) change from the 17th to the 19th centuries? Give 3 examples and discuss womens labor in the larger context of major events in early American history such as colonial America, slavery, the American Revolution, and the rise of industrialism and market capitalism. Discuss women from different backgrounds in your examples.
Essay 2: Primary Source Analysis:
Using the posted journal entries as a primary source, and the textbook to contextualize them, write a short essay on the early life of Charlotte Forten, a free Black young woman in the North in the Antebellum era, and discuss her relationship to three of the following issues: the abolitionist movement, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Christianity, and the cult of true womanhood.
