Speeches are presented in all forums from special events to the job. Any time we are expected to give a presentation, we should always prepare. That preparation starts with the plan of the speech. Then you move to the creation and practice.
The specific purpose is the “particular action you want your audience to take”. The “action” is dictated by the type of speech. Therefore, for an informative speech the action will be “what you want your audience to know, understand or do if they want”. For a persuasive speech the action will be “to change attitudes, values, beliefs or behaviors”.
You will create the thesis statement from the specific purpose (BT Dubs…this is the trick for any one who has difficulty creating a thesis. The thesis is the main idea, right? Therefore, the thesis is the purpose, right? So, create the purpose statement first, change the verbiage, and that will help to create the thesis).
Your discussion…
Give a sample specific purpose statement, not just a general purpose like “to inform my audience about Gucci”, and thesis to these three professional, INFORMATIVE topics:
History of insulin (you are an employee of the Lilly Corp. and speaking at a medical forum at the local hospital for parents of newly diagnosed diabetic children)
How to register to vote (you are a staffer for the local Supervisor of Elections speaking at a high school and informing students who just turned 18 how to register)
Blue Bell Creameries marketing plans for their new ice cream flavors (you are the marketing director for Blue Bell Creameries and you are at a conference in their home state of Texas speaking at the Texas Creamery Association)
For each of these topics, you need to tailor to what is stated here. This is to help you determine your purpose in order to create the thesis. Use the explanation of each topic to determine how to tailor. See example below.
*Note: this is a speech, not a paper. A thesis statement in a speech is one sentence, and we do not preview the main points because there is a separate preview statement.
Example:
Topic: Gucci’s new fall line (you are a representative of Gucci speaking to a group of international department store executives and marketers)
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Gucci’s new fall line so they can see the new designs and know when the products will be released so they understand the influence this design house has had on the fashion industry for almost 100 years.
Thesis: For almost 100 years, Gucci has been an influencer of fashion design, and the new fall line with new styles and updates to classic designs is set to release in early September of this year.
After you submit your initial post, reply to three or more of your classmates’ postings. For this post, give an honest and respectful critique of their statements. Perhaps give them suggestions of how to revise the statement? Be kind, and when you receive critiques, be open-minded. See the Discussion Rubric for additional information and grading criteria.
