When Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt became president in 1901, after serving as Vice President to William McKinley and assuming the role when McKinley was assassinated. He served as president until 1909. Roosevelt saw himself as an arbiter between capital (business owners) and labor. He viewed his role as to be an advocate for both, regulating business and working to negotiate labor disputes. After leaving office, he became disenchanted with the practices of his successor, President William Taft, and ran against him in 1912. Roosevelt created a new, third party, the Progressive or “Bull Moose” party. He ran on a platform of “The New Nationalism.”
