For this paper, you will write an expository essay that compares the predictions made in the 2019 report with the
2021 report and persuasively argue to your readers why the overall predictions for the future have changed or have
remained the same. Expository essays are ones where you investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the
idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner (Purdue University, 2021, para.
1). Though the essay will be spent supporting your opinion on whether the forecast has changed, do not refer to
yourself in the essay. Do not use the word I nor other similar self-referencing personal pronouns.
Recommended essay structure:
I recommend that you make an outline of the essay before you begin writing it. However, it is easier for many writers
to start composing the essay to discover what they have in their minds to say and then go back to organize what
they have written. You may use the title highlighted in yellow above as the title of your paper. Your essays
introductory paragraph should hook your reader with reasons why they should care about what working in America
will be like in the future, and why COVID-19 has or has not made an impact on how the future looks. Those reasons
can come from you as your opinion (without using the word I), but they can also come from the source readings. By
the end of that introductory paragraph, summarize what you are the main argument will be for the entire essay, and
list the topics you will cover to prove that you are correct. This argument summary should be only one sentence long
for a paper this short; the essay should be 600-750 words from introduction to conclusion, written in Times
New Roman, Arial, or Calibri font. This sentence is what is known as the essays thesis statement. Heres an
example (do not use this in your own essay): Nothing has changed in the predictions about the future of working in
America, as the U.S. workforces response to COVID-19 has shown that jobs considered the lower end and easily
automated are the ones that disappeared first. This sentence is arguable because someone could easily debate
whether the statement nothing has changed is wrong. The sentence provides information that can become topics
of discussion throughout the essay, such as a paragraph summarizing the predictions for the U.S. workforce before
COVID-19 compared to the predictions after COVID-19 impacted society. What did the two sources say, if anything,
about lower-end jobs? Did the source readings mention what would happen to those in higher-end jobs? What did
they say, if anything, about automation and technologys impact on certain forms of work and careers? In anticipation
of someone having the opposite opinion, the essay should acknowledge what that opposing opinion might be and
persuasively prove that opinion wrong or invalid. Answers to each of these could form individual topics, and each
body paragraph should focus on evaluating and expounding on only one point. If you make a list of ideas that you can
write about for this essay based on the readings and your opinions, you should have many topics to choose from,
more than would be necessary to fulfill the word count for this paper. As a conclusion to the essay, let your reader
know where you stand on the issue of the future of work in America. Will the future be better or worse, for some or for
all, in some places but not in others? Use this essay to demonstrate your ability to form an argument that can be
supported by the things you have read. This is not a book report where you spend time just re-telling what you read.
