Discussion:
The rod CNG is normally occupied by Ca2+ most of the time. Under these conditions, Ca2+ essentially blocks the passage of Na+, which is able to pass through the channel much more quickly. However, studies do suggest instances in which the permeability of ions of the CNG is able to change or adapt depending on the intracellular factors, such as the concentration of cGMP, or the number of ligands bound. Therefore, one might be able to conclude that it is possible to have events where Na+ can fully replace Ca2+.
In light of the findings that CNG channels are able to change their functional properties, are there any consequences if mutations were to arise in these channels?
