Ethical Decision Making

– Select a professional ethical dilemma that you have experienced or of which you are aware. You are now going to have the opportunity to revisit that situation, examine your options and make your decision based on your personal ethical standards.

-Use steps 1-4 of the M.O.R.A.L. model for Ethical Decision Making to resolve the dilemma.

M.O.R.A.L. Model for Ethical Decision Making

1. Massage the dilemma
*Identify all the salient points of the situation. Determine whose interests are involved?
* What are the varying perspectives? What are the conflicting loyalties?
2. Outline the options/possibilities (Listed possible options in the first column of the attached worksheet)
3. Review and resolve
* Apply the ethical principles involved (both respected and violated).
* Next, compare the options in column one against the ethical principles you have selected. (If the principle is respected, score it as 1. If the principle is determined to be neutral, score it as 0. If the principle is violated, score it as -1. (attached )
4. Affirm your position and assume responsibility for your choice.
5. Look back–Assess the basis for your decision and whether you acted with integrity.

– Use the ethical principles, such as those listed in the grid (attached), which you believe are the most appropriate for your dilemma.

-In step 5, reflect on your decision-making. Clearly address steps 1-5.

-Include conclusion as summary
-Support your paper with at least three (3) scholarly sources that are Nursing or Medical related.
– Sources should be current, ideally within the last 5 years and no more than 10.
