As you know, there is a paper project for this course. In this assignment you will propose your paper topics and research questions. In the paper you will analyze an aspect of democratization in a developing country. Your topic should focus on a current issue (within the recent decade). This will not be a historical paper. For example, you can propose to analyze certain economic or political factors that impede democratic transition in a country. Or you can investigate the impact of military on the democratization process in a country, or factors that assisted democratic transition. Aspects of democratization could be civil-military relations, civil society, elite pacts or coalitions, social movements, political parties and so on. These factors can be investigated to explain how democratization occurred or delayed. You can also examine a stage of democratic transition or democratization. Please propose your topic in a paragraph as a text entry. Please try to be as specific as possible, which specific aspect of democratization you will investigate and where. Why do you think that’s important to analyze.
