This strength finder assessment was interesting. It helped me to realize what some of my strengths are. I tend to focus more on my weaknesses than my strengths. The following is the result of my strength finder assessment
Restorative:
I enjoy solving problems, it energizes me.
I enjoy the challenge of analyzing problems, figuring out what is wrong, and finding the answer to the problem.
Overall, I dont shy away from a problem and look for ways to solve the problem. If I cant, I seek advice from those who are more experienced than I am.
Harmony:
I try to reach an agreement with others in order to come to a mutual agreement in order to continue to work well with teammates.
This mentions that I view that there is little to gain from conflict and friction. However, I do not agree with this assessment. I am not afraid of conflict and if there is an issue, I will address it with that person in private. I overanalyze a lot of things. So, it is better for me to address the issue directly with the person in question and talk instead of stewing over what ifs in my head.
I do tend to try to bring the conflict to a harmonious ending.
I didnt use to hold my opinion to myself; however, I do tend to keep my opinion to myself because it is largely an opinion that many others dont share and can lead to hateful debates.
I agree with the statement that we are all on the same boat and there is no point in rocking it if you dont have to.
Consistency:
Coworkers have told me that, one of the reasons they respected me, I was consistent in how I treated my coworkers. I would not show favoritism or treat others poorly while treating others better. I would consistently be the same.
The description states, In direct contrast to this world of special favors, you believe that people function best in a consistent environment where the rules are clear and are applied to everyone equally (Rath & Buckingham, 2007).
Arranger:
The book describes an arranger as some who enjoys managing multiple tasks at once. That really isnt my style. When I was an ER charge nurse, I would have tons of things on my mind to think about. I had difficulty with doing this because I would forget other minor tasks due to focusing more on the bigger tasks and issues.
I am definitely flexible and willing to hear others opinions on how to solve an issue, even if they have less experience that I do. I am also willing to change my plan when given new information.
Activator:
I tend to be inpatient with action. If Im in a leadership role, I tend to get impatient when I give the coworker a task and they take their time to do it.
The description states, You make a decision, you take action, you look at the result, and you learn (Rath & Buckingham, 2007). I agree with this statement. I tend to learn more from my mistakes than doing the right thing.
My core values are constantly being put in check while in a leadership role. When it comes to your core values, you have to implement critical thinking and emotional intelligence in the area of your practice and when dilemmas arise (Bent-Goodley, 2017). As a leader, my core values are trying to fair across the board and to treat my coworkers with respect. I try to be fair across the board in order for other coworkers to realize that I will be the same with them with issues as I am with others. I also want to gain their respect. If I have their respect, they are willing to do more for me if I ask them too.
My two strengths are that I do not shy away from conflict and I am willing to change my way of thinking if given evidence of a better way of doing something. According to Gerardi, 2015), conflict is a pattern that comes from personal interactions in a dynamic work environment, such as an emergency room. The stress that ER nurses have to deal with on a daily basis can cause conflicts among coworkers. I would have to address conflict among other coworkers and when conflict found me. Im also willing to change my views based on new evidence. This goes with policy changing, politics, I am not set in my ways that I can not change. I think this is a quality most people should have, but we can turn on the TV and watch the news to realize that most people wont change their point of view.
Two characteristics that I want to work on are my constant need to have the respect of my coworkers and my lack of self-confidence. I tend to try too hard to earn their respect and, in the process, overwork myself. By the end of my time as a charge nurse in the ER, my desire to have everyones respect diminished. I still wanted it; however, it was not as important near the end of my time in the ER. My self-confidence definitely needs some work. I tend to doubt myself and my nursing knowledge a lot. I have proven to myself that I know more than I give myself credit for; yet, I still have my doubts. It is something that I have been working on and still work on.
