**You need to already own the book: Designing Language Courses: A Guide for Teachers, 2000, By: Kathleen Graves. **
–The author of Designing Language Courses, Kathleen Graves, says:
One of the reasons I started teaching and writing about course design was because much of the literature about curriculum design portrayed the process as a logical, rational sequence. . . This logical sequence is often impractical or unproductive and has the effect of making teachers feel that they are doing something wrong if they dont follow it….
If you take a systems view of course design -like a forest or human body- and see that when you are working on one process, you are in fact working on others, then it becomes a more feasible process. For example, a clear set of goals and objectives will provide a framework for both assessment and materials development and thus make both of those processes easier. Its not a question of getting one ‘right’ before moving on to the next -2000, p.5-.
What do you think of her perspective on course design? Given the 8-week time frame of our course, we are walking through each of the steps of course design in a linear-sequential way, but do her statements resonate with you? What are the benefits of seeing course design the way she does?
