University of Chicago Prompt.
4. “There is no such thing as a new idea” – Mark Twain. Are any pieces of art, literature, philosophy, or technology truly original, or just a different combination of old ideas? Pick something, anything (besides yourself), and explain why it is, or is not, original.
Inspired by Haina Lu, Class of 2022
Technically, I believe there’s no true original ideas anymore
Most “new” ideas today are inspired from previous ideas and the reanimation of ideas will continue until it’s no longer recognisable from the source
An example is the difficulty to copyright a fashion design because it’s difficult to confirm the originality of a design. A change from 3 to 4 buttons is considered a different design. The search of originality will never reach a finite end. Or the Evolution of car sharing App: Uber vs Grab in South East Asia (Please do not use fashion in the essay, it is just an example as I am applying for computer science major – maybe something on technology)
Especially, in the age of internet there are too many inspirations for ideas
In the past, new ideas were born because of trial and error, lack of exposure and plenty of time to experiment
