Consider the following arguments:
1. Being best friends is a lot like being married. Therefore, when you cease to be friends, you should have some rights to your friend’s property.
2. Studies have shown that 78% of former NFL players have gone bankrupt or are under financial stress. Therefore, NFL players are likely to lose their fortunes.
3. Pro football players Plaxico Burress, Michael Vick, and OJ Simpson were all convicted of felonies. Clearly, the entire NFL is a gang of thugs.
4. If athletes set an example, then their fans’ behavior will improve. Athletes are clearly not setting an example, so fan behavior will not improve.
5. Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow says that God loves football, so it is okay to watch it on Sundays.
Step 2: Identify the type of fallacy for each of the 5 above statements. (formal fallacy, a fallacy of weak induction, or no fallacy at all)
Explain how you can distinguish between fallacy and argument, and explain what each of the 5 statements is and why.
Then answer the following:
“By what criteria can you discern logical fallacies in an argument? How would you discern the logical fallacies within each scenario listed above?”
