Artwork titles need to be italicized and not in quotes.
If you use any portion of a gallery text, catalog, or something from the internet, it must be properly cited using the Chicago Manual of Style. (If you want to avoid citing multiple texts, then focus your review on expressing your own understanding of the art exhibition you’ve chosen to write about)
Don’t try to fill the word count with unnecessary biographical information; if you cite this type of information, it needs to be relevant. An example would be if the exhibition deals with the topic of identity, then describing aspects of the artist’s identity would be relevant to an understanding of their work.
Writing Needs to Answer:
What is the exhibition about?
How does the artist(s) address this topic in their work?
Is this exhibition topical (does it deal with issues that exist in the world today)?
Describe the physical aspect of the artwork(s) on display
Describe the conceptual aspects of the artwork(s) on display.
If this is a group show, what is the curatorial direction of the exhibition? How does this selection of artists address the theme chosen by the curator?
Would you recommend people see this show, and why?
