What transitional programs are provided for students with disabilities in your school district? Contact the director of the special education department in your district and find out what the district is doing to help students with disabilities transition from school to the world of work or to post-secondary education. Describe each program and the types of students it serves.

Get permission to visit one of the programs that prepares students with disabilities for jobs in the community. Go to the work site and report on the type of activities or learning taking place in this setting. Describe the setting and identify the individuals involved in this setting besides the students, such as the teachers, administrators, teacher’s aids, job coaches, etc…Your report should begin with background information about the setting, such as the name and address of the setting, phone numbers, contact people, etc.Also, indicate the date, time and duration of your visit.
Interview one of the students, one of the teachers, and one of the job coaches. Prior to the interviews, design an observation form for each person you plan to interview to guide your recording of data. Your interviews should address the following issues:
1. Personal-social needs of the students/workers with disabilities.
2. Physical needs of the students/workers with disabilities.
3. The self-images of the students/workers with disabilities.
4. Safety factors and modifications required by the students/workers.
5. The training model utilized to prepare the students/workers.
6. The type of compensation or reward for learning or performing such a job
7. Evidence that transition from this limited setting to a more public setting in the community is attainable for these individuals with disabilities.
Your report should end with your overall assessment of the visit, of the program, of the work site, as well as your impressions of the different individuals you met. Also, reflect on what you have learned from this experience.
