. You must submit your final book report through Book Report Submission link available on our Canvas course page

In general, the report format needs to be consistent with the Modern Language Associations (MLA) academic report style. These guidelines are intended to help you write the book report and avoid some of the very common mistakes students make when writing a book report.

General Introduction:
Start with a one paragraph introduction. This should contain the title of the book, the author, and a broad summary or introduction to the book. Following the introduction, you can start to talk about specific chapters or subjects contained in the book.

The goal of the report is to show that you read the book and understand the major issues discussed in the book. Obviously, you cannot talk about everything the author talks about in a few pages. Therefore, you need to decide what are the most important ideas or concepts in the book and focus on those. This section should be the most substantial portion of the report.

Following the description of the details of the book, tell me whether you liked the book or not, and why you liked or did not like the book. Perhaps the author said something you agree/disagree with and you can explain in this section why you agree/disagree with them. Another possible format would be to intersperse our own comments and opinions as you discuss a particular point from the book.

Copy Editing:
Use Times New Roman Font, a 12 point font size, and double space lines. This is standard and easy to read.

Refer to the authors by their last name after the first time you introduce the book and title in the paper.

Always refer to a non-fiction book as a book, not a novel.

Do not start a sentence with a number. For example, 3 children are singing. is incorrect. It should be written: Three children are singing.

Indent the first line of each paragraph. Do not leave an extra space between paragraphs. The indentation of the first line tells the reader a new paragraph has started. In general, one paragraph should be about one main idea. Do not switch subjects abruptly in the middle of a paragraph. It is very difficult for the reader to follow.

You are allowed to copy sentences from the book as long as you attribute the quote to the author. For example, Ross et. al. (2020) write, In our previous chapter, we covered the basics of discounted cash flow valuation. In the case where you are only using the book itself as a reference, you can use a page number rather than the date of publication. For example, Ross et. al. (p.123) write, When you finish this chapter, you should have some very practical skills.

You can also use what is called a block quote. This is when you use an extended quotation of more than one sentence length. Block quote should be single spaced and the entire quote should be indented. For example:

In the beginning of Chapter 9, Ross et. al. state:

So far, weve covered various parts of the capital budgeting decision. Ours task in this chapter is to start bringing these pieces together

Book references should be in the following format:

Ross, Stephen A., Randolph W. Westerfield, and Bradford, D. Jordan, 2020, Essentials of Corporate Finance, 10th Edition. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Education
