Reading Response. Please read the attached article and respond to the following reading response prompt:
>>Attached is a NY Times article about the Sara Bareilles song “She Used To Be Mine” from the Broadway show WAITRESS. The article discusses how the song has taken on “a life of its own”…resonating with different performers and different audiences beyond the scope of the original character. For your reading response, please identify another song that you feel has also ” taken on a life of its own” beyond its original audience. This does not mean find a cover and discuss it…it means a cover recording of a song that has created a new story around the song, found an audience outside of the original one etc. There are many songs from the past hundred years of popular music that have developed audiences far beyond what was originally expected.
Describe why you think your song choice resonated with audiences or performers beyond its original incarnation, what was it about the composition or a particular recording of it that made it so impactful.? What elements of it as a composition contributed to its wider appeal? The exercise here is for you to start to identify and understand songs that can find a wider audience than initially expected through interpretation by artists that may present it in an “alternative” light… and why creators and publishers are always looking for a copyright that has this potential. This is an assignment that requires you to wear your ” creative” hat rather than your “business” hat…an essential aspect of music publishing… because at the end of the day it is the song that ultimately matters.<< This assignment will be due by 2:00pm on Thursday Nov 23rd through the portal marked Reading Response 4 in on our Brightspace page. NO late submissions will be accepted. The usual two-three pages WORD document is required.
