Your critical analysis should be 3-4 pages, double spaced, and include your name, a title, page numbers, and a bibliography.
Part 1: Summary
The summary should identify the thesis, or main point, that the writer attempts to establish in the essay. What conclusion is the author trying to argue for? What is the overall purpose of the essay? Identifying the main thesis is the first step towards outlining the argument offered in the selection. In other words, the argument in the passage must be presented within its proper context.
Next, the summary should identify the reasons that the author uses to support the main thesis. The summary should also identify subordinate reasons, evidence, and examples used to support the central reasons in the essay. The reasons in the essay are there to buttress, or support, the main idea or point the author is trying to establish. You should provide a fair and accurate summary of the authors reasons. This is a chance for you to use your paraphrasing skills. Do not be afraid to present these reasons in your own words! The best philosophy scholars and instructors succeed in doing just that! Imagine that you are trying to explain to a friend what the author argues about issue X. A good technique is to review the argument four or five times and see if you can remember the broad outlines. Then put away the article and write down a sketch of the argument. You can always go back to the article later to get more accurate details.
The summary should be at least three-four paragraphs in length (1-1.5 pages).
Part II: Analysis
You must also present a brief evaluation of the authors argument. This is your chance to criticize the author by demonstrating the holes in her or his reasoning.
What inconsistencies were you able to identify in the flow of the authors argumentation? What supporting evidence should clearly be called into question? If you sympathize with the authors position, he or she would thank you for pointing out the weaknesses that need to be addressed! If the article angered or upset you, the evaluation is your opportunity to apply razor-sharp logical analysis to expose the weaknesses in his or her argument. Just be sure, in either case, to represent fairly the argument and expose its legitimate weaknesses.
Devote at least two paragraphs to the evaluation of the argument presented in the article (.5-1 page).
Quotations should be kept to a minimum. For a critical analysis, you should paraphrase material presented in the text as much as possible. Try to present the issues in your own
words and formulations. Of course, paraphrasing, as well as direct quotations, will require citations. Use citations to indicate the pages you are summarizing. Please use the APA in-text citation format (including pages numbers). If you cannot avoid providing a direct quotation, please indicate it by using quotation marks and page numbers (APA in-text citation format) so that the reader may reference it later. There is a maximum of 2 direct quotes in this paperso paraphrase as much as possible!
