consider these types of communities as the future “standard” similar to the virtual community presented in Ready Player One. You will engage in critically reading the online community and thinking “if this is the future, will it work? How will it work?”

use criteria to analyze an online community connected to your field of study/major.

You will use the Academic Search Premier database in CGCC’s library eResources to find a journal article related to the search “online communities”. The goal is to familiarize yourself with what they are, and, some of the research that has been conducted about them. You may want to use the search term in conjunction with your major: for example “online communities” and “education” or “teaching” or “nursing” or “engineering”…
You will also use the Internet (Google) to find an online community related to your future field or major. For example, Classroom 2.0 (Links to an external site.) is an online Professional Learning Network (PLN) for educators.
Your goal is to consider these types of communities as the future “standard” similar to the virtual community presented in Ready Player One. You will engage in critically reading the online community and thinking “if this is the future, will it work? How will it work?”
You do not need to become a long-term member of any of the communities, but many require initial registration to gain access. Find a community that you feel you have some knowledge of–or are already a member of that is related to your field.
Assignment Rules:

Use Academic Search Premier as your research database.
Find a journal article that you can read in detail that will teach you something about online communities and your major/field of study. You may want to use the search term in conjunction with your major: for example “online communities” and “education” or “teaching” or “nursing” or “engineering”…
Follow these questions to guide you through a detailed, and thorough evaluation of your chosen article and online community:

Begin with an explanation of the article you chose and why: what was particularly appealing or interesting about the study? Insert the title and make sure you use proper MLA citations including in-text citations throughout your written evaluation.
Follow with a detailed summary of the online community you chose to critically read and analyze. Include the name, URL and any other identifying information in your summary.
Your final paper should be at least a couple of pages long if you are effectively and thoroughly reading/learning about online communities and engaging with an online PLN.
Lastly, conclude with a reflection: Will these types of online communities become the standard in the future? If so, what will need to change about the ways in which we live, work, interact to accommodate for these types of online interactions?
As always, make sure your assignment follows proper formatting: MLA including works cited. Minimum paper length should be 1 1/2 – 2 pages in length and include in-text citations.
