dystopian essay

I want you to write a two-page essay (approximately 700 words) in which you take and defend a position on a question about our two dystopian novels. This is NOT a research paper. I DO NOT want to know what scholars think. I want only your opinion. The assignment should be submitted through Canvas in two weeks.

Aldous Huxley stated that one of his regrets regarding Brave New World is that he gave John the Savage only two options–the Insanity of his technological Utopia, or the Lunacy of the Reservations. “Insanity” and “lunacy” are often interchangeable, yet what he had in mind is that one world is delusional and sterile, while the other is driven by irrational and superstitious passions. Huxley regretted not giving John a third option.

It occurred to me that in a way, 1984 is the analogue of Brave New World. What motivates the Controllers of BNW is a need for peace and stability. What motivates Big Brother is a lust for power over others. The two authors have given us insanity on the one hand and lunacy on the other.

In your opinion, which nightmare is worse. Defend your answer with evidence. Again, this is not a research paper. If you need to quote either novel, just use internal citation methods (parenthetical citation).

The essay should be formatted in MLA style, like your English papers (heading, title, multi-paragraphs, double spaced, etc.) This is an all-or-nothing assignment. If you tell me what you honestly think, and you defend your view with reasons, then you have done a good job. You get twenty points. If not, you get zero points.
