For this assignment, write a blog post about an example of a place in the world where conflict emerged between stakeholders and/or rightsholders over a proposed development that will damage or destroy a culturally significant location (could be an archaeological site, groups of sites, cultural landscapes, buildings). It can be as small as a building in your community that is being torn down to make room for a condo development or as vast as a pipeline that runs through the traditional territory of an Indigenous people. In this case, you need to identify and discuss the issue, paying particular attention to the details surrounding the point of conflict. Who has a stake in the issue and why (and to whom) is it important? Are you able to propose a way forward?
To complete this assignment, read the two assigned readings and find three journal or newspaper articles on the issue you wish to write about. At least two different perspectives should be documented in the articles you choose.
For the assigned readings, you will need to read Ireland et al. 2021. and the Tutchener et al. 2021. These will provide you with some background theory on significance, value, and other ideas that you might find helpful for this assignment. They will also provide you with examples or case studies of points of contention over archaeological/heritage sites and meanings, or examples of how groups have come together to move forward. You can use these to compare and contrast with the scenario you are choosing to write about. You can agree or disagree with these articles, but please make sure that you explain why.
The post should be approximately 2400 words and include at least 3 photographs. It should be informed (i.e. show us that youve read the assigned articles and have found and read additional newspaper articles on your topic), but should promote your perspective on the issue at hand. How do the newspaper articles relate to what you have read in the assigned journal articles? Please use the active voice when writing, but your ideas should still be arranged in a logical order (in other words, make sure there is a coherent narrative).
