This essay will allow you to explore a current event and use your research and documentation skills.

Your task will be to find and research an event which has happened in the world within the last 3 months. For ease of writing, this event should be one that happened within a day or less, not one that is still ongoing. You will then write a brief, persuasive essay that outlines key details from what happened, what the United States response (or the response of the party involved, ie. police, university officials, military, local government, pastor etc.) was, what you feel the response should have been or how the response was correct or incorrect (along with reasons) and cites sources properly.

The final draft of your essay should meet the following requirements:

A succinct, persuasive thesis statement
Effective organization and use of transitions
Sufficient use of details and background information from the event
The use of at least two credible, academic sources
The use of at least one quote and one paraphrase for each sources (more is recommended)
Proper documentation for both the quotes and the paraphrases
The use of only third person you are just reporting on the event and the accuracy of the response and should not include statements spoken in personal experience or opinion — i.e. first person pronouns (I) — or second person pronouns (you).

In addition to the above, the final draft of your essay should be:

At least 600 (but no more than 800) words in length
formatted according to MLA style
documented using MLA style with the use of a Works Cited page and In-Text citations
