Kibud UMorah: The Honor and Fear of Parents ( p.126-157)

In another elegant essay by Rav Soloveitchik, we get a glimpse of his world-view and analysis of the relationship between children and parents.

Rav Soloveitchik takes the simple concept of honoring and fearing our parents and builds a framework to better understand the goals of this relationship.

1) At first Rav Soloveitchik presents a utilitarian approach to one’s parents ( sound familiar to other readings we’ve done this semester??) – we owe them honor since they bore us and raised us and in time we hope that our children will treat us with honor and respect, but then he transitions to a deeper understanding for the framework of honoring and fearing parents. How would you explain this deeper approach?

2) What is the connection between the realization that we do not live in isolation and that of ?

3) How and why does Rav Soloveitchik connect honoring our parents with that of honoring and fearing G-d?

4) Back to another theme of Kneset Yisrael….why does Rav Soloveithik complete this chapter by bringing in the notion of Kneset Yisrael? What does that have to do with honoring our parents?

5) How might this essay impact your perspective on your relationship with your parents?
