Faye Abdellah developed the patient-centered approach to nursing, considered a human needs theory. Abdellah’s theory includes 10 nursing skills to be used in developing a treatment typology:
Learn to know the patient
Sort out relevant and significant data
Make generalizations about available data in relation to similar nursing problems presented by other patients
Identify the therapeutic plan
Test generalizations with the patient and make additional generalizations
Validate the patient’s conclusions about his or her nursing problems
Continue to observe and evaluate the patient over a period of time to identify any attitudes and clues affecting his or her behavior
Explore the patient’s and family’s reaction to the therapeutic plan and involve them in the plan
Identify how the nurse feels about the patient’s nursing problems
Discuss and development a comprehensive nursing care plan (Abdellah, et al, 1960).
Abdellah’s patient- centered approach to nursing, is very similar to Carl Rogers person-centered therapy. Both approaches require the provider to follow Rogers approach. To be empathetic and completely accepting of the patient for who they are. To unconditionally care for the patient and gain a genuine understanding of their problem. Rogers’ also emphasizes that we, as the providers, we must be our genuine selves, not our professional self, when dealing with our patients. As this approach will allow our patients to put their guard down and become more accepting of treatment.
