The literature review provides the reader with an overview of the current scientific knowledge on your topic. This is the section of the paper where you identify theories and key findings relevant to your research question. Remember that the goal of the literature review is to both summarize the previous research on the topic and highlight the gaps in our knowledge about your topic.

Your literature review should have 3 main sections:
The introduction (~1 page)
o This section often gives the reader a broad introduction on your topic. It often situates the importance of the topic, by stating, for example, how prevalent an issue is, whether a topic is controversial, if the phenomena has been on the rise, how many people are affected, etc.
o **NOTE**: Do not overstate the importance of the problem. Things do not necessarily need to be on the rise or a new problem to warrant scientific studies.
o The introduction typically ends with a statement of your research question and an outline of the sections of your literature review.
The main body (~5 pages)
o This is the main section of your literature review. It should logically organize prior research on your topic (by theme or concepts, for example).
o Your literature review should remain neutral about the answer to your question and simply report what others have found on the topic, including findings that do not necessarily line up with your expectations about the answer to your research question.
o Limit each paragraph to one main idea though make sure that most of your ideas are supported by multiple references.
o Organizing your literature review by sections can be a good idea, and you can use headers if youd like, though use them sparingly.
o It is important that your literature review is not simply a collection of paragraphs summarizing prior studies. You should try to make connections between studies and synthesize the state of the literature as a whole.
o Avoid spending too much time on technical details of a study (e.g. sample size, database used, statistical models used, etc.), unless these details are critical to justifying your research question. You should focus more on summarizing the findings of the study and making links to findings of other studies.
o The amount of time you spend on a specific topic, study, or set of studies should be proportional to their importance and relevance to your research question.
o Your literature review should support with in-text citations any claims you make that are not “common-sense” or that are not your own analysis of prior studies. Common-sense claims are facts (not opinions) that most people would agree on. For example, a statement like “Crime is increasing in America” should be supported by evidence. But a statement like “Crime happens every day in America” is a common-sense statement that do not need to be supported with a reference.
o Use a variety of forms of in-text citations (e.g. in parenthesis, naming the authors as part of the sentence, combined sources). Using different forms of in-text citations makes the paper more readable and less monotone.

The summary and research question (~1 page)
o The final section of your paper should be brief and synthesize the entire literature review in a few paragraphs. Focus on the most important aspects of prior studies especially the gaps in prior research that justifies the need for your research question.
o The summary should end with a re-statement of your research question.
o NOTE: Remember that this is not a conclusion per say. This is the first part of a longer paper so it shouldnt really have a conclusion or an answer to your research question.
Use of sources and APA formatting
Your paper should cite a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed articles, 7 of which should be original research.
Your 10 articles must be referenced in the text, not simply be listed in your reference list.
You should be careful not to overly rely on a handful of sources, especially when it comes to review articles. Some articles may feature more prominently in your review, but make sure sources are somewhat evenly distributed throughout your main ideas.
You are welcome to use more sources if youd like. You can even use other reliable sources that are not peer-reviewed articles (e.g. government reports, non-profit organization websites). However, these sources should not play a major role in your literature review.
**Tip**: Non-peer reviewed sources can be useful in the introduction, particularly if you are looking for current statistics about your topic.
