Introductory Paragraph
first paragraph is a brief introduction that addresses the significance of the issue. Hook readers by connecting to something they care about and explaining why this topic is controversial. The last sentence of this paragraph must be your synthesis question.

Synthesis Question: Are gun laws too lax? If so, what role do gun laws play in gun violence and how can gun laws be improved to better screen for dangerous mental illness?

Background Paragraph
Introduce the two authors, article titles, and their central purposes. What should the reader know about these articles to help them understand the upcoming argument points? What are the key concepts and how are they defined? This paragraph provides a foundation for the reader to better understand the more detailed argument points coming next.

Comparing Perspectives (minimum 2 paragraphs)- See guidelines in Unit 2 for body paragraph structure
Discussion of shared Question or Argument Point #1 that both authors address. (minimum one paragraph)

Discussion of shared Question or Argument Point #2 that both authors address/discuss. (minimum one paragraph)

Exploratory Synthesis (one paragraph minimum)
Explain how the two articles contribute to your understanding of the issue. How have your thoughts changed? How have they evolved, possibly just getting more specific than before you had this information? Make connections to things you personally know that relate to this issue. Do not repeat what the authors said! This is about your view on the topic. (Use first person: I)

Conclusion (one paragraph)
A brief paragraph which brings closure to the essay and leaves the reader with something to think about.
