LESSON 5 REVIEW:

Our appropriation of divine guidance. Fenced-in sheep need no shepherd, but flocks that roam the open range are completely dependent on their shepherd. He and his dogs keep the strays close to the flock for protection. He leads them to graze from pasture to pasture. All a sheep needs to do is to follow the guidance of the shepherd. Jesus compares His relationship with us to that of a shepherd and his sheep. John 10:14 cites Jesus’ words, I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
Two puzzling questions about guidance and the will of God demand answers. Why do you need divine guidance? How can you receive divine guidance?
You need divine guidance because of your limitations. We all are limited in knowledge. Only God knows the future. You may not know God’s will until after you have experienced it. All you can do is follow His leading a step at a time. Moses lamented his limitations when God directed him to lead Israel. His limitations are typical of ours.
You receive divine guidance by meeting God’s conditions. Four basic conditions that allow you to understand divine guidance are Spirit control, dedication, faith, and prayer. Spirit control measures one’s general spiritual health and well-being; spirituality indicates the level of spiritual growth, or spiritual maturity, one has attained (see Galatians 6:1). Even an immature Christian can and should be spiritually controlled. First Corinthians 2:14-16 describes the mature Christian in contrast to the non-Christian:
A spirit-controlled Christian is yielded to the Holy Spirit, who supplies divine guidance (Romans 6:13-14). So guidance requires this spiritual relationship. A spirit-controlled Christian also experiences close fellowship with his Heavenly Father. Spiritual growth will be his continuing experience. Spirit control with continuing spiritual growth rates a top priority for a Christian. God values your personal life and relationship with Him more highly than your ministry for Him. Seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness first, and divine guidance will follow.
Dedication means to devote yourself to live for God and to serve Him. Dedication includes three steps related to divine guidance: a surrender of self, a submission to God’s will, and a servant attitude. In surrender you give yourself to Christ. In other words, conversion makes Jesus your Savior and Lord (Romans 10:9-10). Your commitment acknowledges Christ’s Lordship and your role as His servant. Romans 12:1-2, labels this commitment as a presentation of your body as a living sacrifice to the Lord:
Submission to God’s will means that you have resolved to obey God, whatever He wants of you and wherever He leads you. Sometimes Christians seek God’s will with mental reservations. They have prejudiced certain ministries, vocations, or locations and ruled them out.
