Tomlinson talks about the learning environment in Chapter 4 of Leading and Managing A Differentiated Classroom. She describes the importance of getting to know your students, building a classroom community, and designing a physical environment to support learning. In Chapter 4, she talks about aspects of the learning environment that are essential to setting the stage for academic success. After reading Chapter 4, ask yourself the following questions:
What is essential to your students learning environments?
What aspects of the learning environment do you strongly believe in?
What must-haves or non-negotiables are important to your classroom?
Create a top ten list of personal non-negotiables based on Tomlinsons work on the learning environment from Chapter 4. After each non-negotiable, write a short 3-5 sentence paragraph describing why this is of personal importance.
For example:
Non-negotiable #10: I must know my students.
It is important for me to get to know my students early on so that they know that I truly care about them and their well-being. Students have to know I care before they can learn from me. Getting to know my students creates trust, and students are more inclined to see me as an advocate and support system.
