Discuss what other characters use code switching around different groups?

Throughout Angie Thomas’ novel “The Hate U Give” we see our main character, Starr, changing the way she talks from one group of people to the next. ‘Code-switching’ occurs when a speaker alternates between two or more languages, or language varieties, in the context of a single conversation. Everyone code switches, even if it’s subconsciously. The way we speak to our parents or teacher is generally not the same way we talk to our friends or siblings. Starr is the most obvious example in this book.

For this week’s discussion board, you will write at least one academic paragraph. Think about the places you see code switching in the book, not just in Starr. What other characters use code switching around different groups? In your paragraph, you will discuss why you think the author includes these language variations. Does it enhance the novel, and by proximity, the justice issue, or is it distracting? Use specific examples from the readings.
