Mental Illness and Risk of Criminalization
There is an assumption made by many today that a person with a mental illness is more likely to perpetrate a violent crime. This is commonly seen after a murder or mass shooting occurs and the perpetrator is quickly assumed to have a mental illness history. The relationship between mental illnesses and violent criminal behavior has been studied. Please read the studies: Mental Disorder and Violent Victimization in a Total Birth Cohort (Silver, et al., 2005); Analyzing Offense Patterns as a Function of Mental Illness to Test the Criminalization Hypothesis (Peterson, et al., 2010); and Offenders with Mental Illness Have Criminogenic Needs, Too (Skeem, et al., 2014). After having read these studies, explore the following topics:
Describe what the relationship is between mental illness and criminal behavior.
What types of risks are greater for those who suffer with mental disorders?
Are there mental illness related factors that predict criminal behavior?
What longer term impacts might a mental illness have on treatment and community management for someone who has a criminal history?
The paper should be APA formatted. It is expected that you will require a minimum of 5 pages to explore the above topics and questions. Please submit your response on Moodle.
