At this early point in the course, we have been reading and discussing materials about the psychological (thoughts, emotions, spirit) and physiological (body) dimensions of home. Weve been reflecting on how home makes us feel and how it shapes our personal identity. Weve been thinking about the location(s) of the place we call home and the relationships weve established there, which so often bond us to place. Some authors have brought our attention to the ways in which a home is a place of history and order, filled with things that resonate with meaning.
In this first essay assignment, you are to develop a critical definition of home as a state of mind, body and soul. In it you must do the following:
Provide a statement of definition”home isthat .
Extend the definition by providing clear illustrations (examples), which are drawn from course materials and personal experience
Contextualize and quote (3) authors we have covered
Cite the expert sources using MLA citation format on a Works Cited page
Remember to keep your writing focused on ideas about home as a frame of mind and body and soul, not as place in a city or neighborhood, which well explore later in the course. If you discuss things in your home, your ideas should center on how they reflect your history and sense of order.
Thesis paragraph should contain: 1) an introduction to the topic of home as a state of body, mind and soul; 2) your statement of definition; and, 3) a preview statement that gives your reader a clear idea of what youll be discussing in the rest of the essay.
Body Paragraphs should develop three ideas on the topic of home and be supported by at least one expert source per idea. Be sure to organize your main ideas logically and connect them with transitions.
Conclude briefly by stating something that youve learned from investigating the concepts and experiences of home as a state of mind, body and spirit. Avoid restating what youve said in the essay. Perhaps say why this sort of critical exploration is important to personal and social understanding and growth.
