WEEK 2 WHAT IS GENDER?
Scholar Judith Butler argues that gender is performative. In the performance of gender, each individual is as an actor of their gender. All gender works in this way of performativity and a representation of an internalized notion of gender norms. In the article, Inside the Lives of Girls Dressed as Boys in Afghanistan, the author discusses the practice of bacha posh in Afghanistan where girls live their lives as boys in order to benefit from the privileges accorded boys in society.
Question #1. How does bacha posh support or refute Butlers theory? Specifically, what is it about the patriarchal society that makes girls want to pass as boys? What does this say about who is important in society and who is not, who is worthy or not, who should have power or privilege? How does sex play a role in gender identity in bacha posh? By dressing like and participating in society as boys, does this change the gender of these girls? How does the concept of intersectionality (e.g. religion) impact gender identity in Afghan society?

WEEK 4 GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND THE CONTINUUM OF VIOLENCE
According to Major-General Patrick Cammaert, former commander of UN peacekeeping forces in the eastern Congo, It has probably become more dangerous to be a woman than a soldier in armed conflict (Cammaert, 2018). Moreover, as we learned, because of the continuum of violence, women and girls often experience a kind of conflict even in peacetime (pre-conflict) and post-conflict.
Question #3. Do you agree or disagree with Major-General Cammaert? In answering this question address: How do women and girls experience GBV in pre-conflict, conflict and post-conflict. Why does GBV take place? How can men be a part of the solution to GBV?
