There was a time when the concept of diversity only focused on surface level diversity such as race, gender, ethnicity or age. Now diversity efforts have moved towards gaining a greater understanding of employee values, personalities and sentiments. This is referred to as deep-level diversity. In the work world and especially for human resources departments (particularly staffing/recruitment) they must consider surface level diversity and deep-level diversity while identifying talent for the workplace. Included in these groups are also veterans and persons with disabilities.
