Discuss the nature of the differences between the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf and the characters from the literature of the Medieval period.

In the poems and plays we have read so far – “Beowulf,” “Gawain and the Green Knight,” “The Canterbury Tales,” “Everyman,” and “The Second Shepherds’ Play” — characters face a series of physical and moral dilemmas.

Beowulf’s dilemmas are clearly different from those of Gawain, the various clerics from Chaucer’s “General Prologue,” the knight from the “Wife of Bath’s Tale,” Everyman and the shepherds in the Second Shepherds’ Play.

First, discuss the nature of the differences between the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf and the characters from the literature of the Medieval period.

Second, briefly discuss the various physical and/or moral dilemmas of (a) Gawain, (b) the clerics from Chaucer’s “General Prologue,” (c) the knight from the “Wife of Bath’s Tale,” (d) the husband from “The Franklin’s Tale,” and finally (e) Everyman and (f) the shepherds in the Second Shepherds’ Play.
