Essay Question/Prompt Options
Option 1: Many works of literature deal with political or social issues. Select one of the short stories which features a political or social issue. Analyze how the author uses literary elements to explore this issue and explain how this issue
contributes to the meaning of the story as a whole (theme). Be careful to avoid plot summary.
Option 2: In order to achieve their goals, characters in literary works must often keep a secret. Sometimes, this
secret must be divulged at precisely the right moment; other times, it is never shared. Select one of the short
stories in which a character keeps an important secret. In your essay, explain why the secrecy is necessary, how it impacts the character and the story, and how it contributes to the meaning of the story as a whole (theme). Be careful to avoid plot summary.
Option 3: A characters surroundings, whether they are geographical, physical, or cultural, can greatly
influence that characters development, worldview, and/or experiences. Select one of the short stories in
which a character is influenced in some way by his/her surroundings, and analyze how the surroundings influence/impact the character and his/her experiences, and how this helps illuminate the meaning of the story as a whole (theme). Be careful to avoid plot summary.
