After reading Logic in Argumentative Writing https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/academic_writing/logic_in_argumentative_writing/index.html and Developing Strong Thesis Statements https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/academic_writing/establishing_arguments/index.html , write a letter about a problem on your campus, in your community, or at work to a person who is in a position to correct the problem.
Provide convincing evidence that a problem exists, and in suggesting a solution to the problem, keep in mind the needs and values of your audience as well as those of others on the campus, in the community, or the workplace.
Your submission should:
Avoid flaws in logic https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/academic_writing/logic_in_argumentative_writing/fallacies.html
Follow APA format: 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, one inch margins.
Include a title page and page numbers.
The Letter must include an inside address with the name of the person or organization to whom you are targeting (that looks like ‘dear so-and-so’–make obvious to me the role/job title of the person you are writing to).
A greeting and a closing.
Your essay must be at least 2 full pages. I am going to take heavy assessments for short submissions; this is in preparation for the 8 page final research essay. I take penalties for short research essays, too.
Note that the rubric asks for a counter; a counter claim/argument is any reason that someone uses to argue against your own claim. For example, if I state that standardized testing is unfair to some learners, someone might come back with the idea that standardized testing is the only way to fairly assess learners across the board. How would you reply to that counter? That idea is your refute (your attempt at diminishing the credibility of their argument by reinforcing the validity of your own argument). This, too, is in preparation for our final essay.
You do not have to include research, but you must cite any source if you do use outside sources. If you want to use outside sources and do not know how to cite them, email me so I can offer you a quick rundown of how that works.
