Write a fair, balanced argument exploring a theme of war using the Rogerian argument method. The theme is war, but the specific argument can explore any aspect of war that interests you; just be sure the topic is controversial and debatable.

The ultimate aim of a Rogerian argument is to get readers to consider an alternative view and examine their own beliefs (and possibly be open to change)
Rogerian theorist Douglas Brent stated that its important to not be too prescriptive when writing in the Rogerian method. There isnt a precise step-by-step formula, but it may help to look at the steps below to plan how you will move from problem to opposing position to your position to conclusion. With the Rogerian Method, the goal is to build toward a common understanding, to open your audience toward new ideas, but not necessarily to change minds.
Even though the goal isnt necessarily to change minds, the Rogerian method is still a form of argument since you are persuading readers to at least consider and respect your point of view.
Paper must haves:
minimum of 4 pages, MLA format
A minimum of four credible sources needed to support your argument.
Incorporate specific examples of events, history, or data to support your argument
All quotes should include text weaving (weaving quoted text into your own writing and assertions)
75% of the text should be your views and assertions and 25% comprised of outside sources
Cite using MLA guidelines and include a Works Cited page
Please try to avoid:
-Do not quote complete sentences from your sources. Weave quoted text phrases smoothly; introduce with strong verbs.
-The Rogerian Method is effective when addressing highly controversial, emotional issues by developing a common understanding or, at least, a mutual respect for opposing opinions.
-Use the Rogerian argument method (tone) by creating common ground and then showing how your claim is more reasonable (use words like perhaps, may, might, could, although, despite, while, even though); use a disclaimer
-Avoid examples such as:
This approach is the only way to absolutely protect our country from war.
All young people need to respect.

OUTLINE OF PAPER
1. Introduction: State the problem you hope to resolve, identifying what the source in conflict is and why there are multiple ways of looking at the issue. By presenting your issue as a problem, you raise the possibility of positive change.
2. Summary of Opposing View: As accurately and neutrally as possible, identify and acknowledge the opposing view. The goal is to convince readers that you clearly understand the other sides position. By doing this you show that you are capable of listening without judging and have given a fair hearing to people who think differently from you.
3. Validation of Opponents View: As a way to show respect and understanding, recognize why your opponents view is logical and valid (in some situations). Recognize why someone could feel or think the way they do. Under which conditions might you share these views?
4. Statement of Your Position: State your position convincingly (include thesis statement), but remain fair, open-minded and non-confrontational. Based on the topic, this may take several paragraphs.
5. Validation of Your Position: Provide convincing evidence and sound reasoning why your argument should also be considered. Describe situations in which your views are logical. By showing that your position has merit in specific contexts, opponents feel more inclined to agree in part and share common ground. Dont explicitly state or demand that your position is best or youll lose the mutual understanding youre working towards.
6. Work to bring the two sides together if possible: Help your audience see the benefits of the middle ground. Make your proposal for any possible compromise, and be sure to use an even, respectful tone.
7. Benefits of Your Position/Conclusion: As you conclude, show why your thesis and position are beneficial. Remind your audience of the balanced perspective you have presented and make it clear how both sides benefit when they meet in the middle.
