Sally G. McMillen, et al., eds., Major Problems in the History of the American South: Documents and Essays, Volume 2: The New South, 3rd Edition (New York: Houghton Mifflin Co., 2012)
Threetofive pages that ask each student to practice the methods scholarly historians use by examining a small number of primary documents related to some aspect of the New South and offering a critical analysis of the same. Students may not write both papers over the same subject, so they must choose either distinct topics or look at one topic at two distinct times. Thus, a student may not write both papers on Populism in the South, but could write one paper about the Populists and another about farmer discontent at another time, perhaps that of the 1920s or 1970s. Students can rely principally on the document reader (McMillen, et al.), but should feel free to track down additional primary sources in a library or archive. More specific guidelines for the paper will be posted on Canvas.
