[Not instructions but a basic outline I wrote that may be useful]
Research Question: How does an excessive use of social media affect the attention span of an adolescent? Does increasing the amount of time a person has on social media reduce their attention span?
Hypothesis: Being addicted to social media or consuming a large amount of it daily will severely decrease the person’s attention span. Because of how much content and new information is being presented to the user, our brains have adapted to consume more media which results in a weaker attention span.
Method Section: The participants that will be used for this experiment will be adolescents ages 12 -17 with a split of 50% male and 50% female. The number of participants will range from 20 to 50. The only restriction will be those who have ADD/ADHD or other health issues that may affect their attention span. The participants will be compensated with a small cash prize after the completion of a questionnaire. All participants were treated following all ethical guidelines in accordance to the APA Code of Ethical Conduct. Materials that will be used include; computer/laptop, questionnaire and a test to measure the participants attention span. The questionnaire will provide details about the persons use of social media which can be confirmed through screenshots of app usage from their phone. Participants who have a high usage will be asked to repeat the test to measure their attention span after reducing their social media consumption, while those who have a low usage of social media consumption will repeat the test after increasing their usage. The participants will be selected from my cousins social media account by those who wish to participate. They will be informed on what the experiment is and after confirming their stay they will fill out a questionnaire. After the completion of the questionnaire they will provide evidence to ensure reliability. Once that is complete they will take the test to measure their attention span. After their results are taken, they will reduce/increase their social media consumption and try the test again after a week. The data will be collected and they will be paid for their time. All of this will be done online. I will be using an anova 2 way test to compute the data.
