Personal Reflection – Addictions and Mental Health

Reflect on your own understandings, beliefs, and/or assumptions about mental health and addictions, and where some of these may come from. Answer the following two reflective questions in paragraph form. As this is a personal reflection, responses should be written in the first person. No research or references are required! Please respond to the following questions:

1. What are the ways mental health and addictions are talked about in your own family and social circles, and what do you see as the strengths and difficulties of these narratives? Identify any bias, stereotypes, preconceptions and/or assumptions (be they positive or negative).

2. What are your own understandings of mental health and addictions? What informs these understandings (in other words, what are your own understandings and why? Where do your own understandings and beliefs come from)?

Assignments should be 12 point font and double-spaced. Both questions combined should be 750 words in length (approximately 375 words per question).

** Your response should demonstrates a succinct exploration of the two reflective questions. Clearly identify your biases, stereotypes, preconceptions, and/or assumptions in existing social narratives.

** Your response should demonstrate personal self-awareness and be written in a personal tone. Response should be reflective of independent and original thought.
