This course is structured in a way that promotes the existence of a Beatles canon. What’s your opinion about canons in general, and about a Beatles canon more specifically? Are canons helpful? Harmful? What stories do Beatles scholars (e.g. in this class, the articles, or others) tell about the Beatles and their music? Does canonizing the Beatles afford us a useful nexus from which to branch out into other musics? Does it limit and/or distort our perception of their music and/or the music of their contemporaries?
The successful essay will begin with a paragraph that defines “canon” and makes a clear and thoughtful argument (2 pts). The argument could be as simple as in favor of or against the idea of a Beatles canon, or could be something more nuanced. The introduction will be followed by three paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence, in support of the argument (2 pts each). Up to 1 point may be earned for a graceful conclusion, and 1 additional point for clear language and easy-to-read formatting.
